Madikwe Safari Lodge
Madikwe Safari Lodge is situated in the heart of the richly diverse and malaria-free 76 000-hectare (187 800-acre) Madikwe Game Reserve – one of South Africa’s biggest wildlife sanctuaries. Famed for Operation Phoenix, the world’s largest game translocation exercise with the introduction of more than 8 000 animals, Madikwe’s diverse geology and broad mix of habitats allows a wide range of African wildlife to flourish – including the Big Five, cheetah and a thriving population of wild dog.

A lot of the time I have seen challenge rituals between zebra stallions while out on game drive but never have I seen a proper fight like I did this morning.
It has been very hot here in Madikwe and there has been little rain, because of this, large numbers of zebras have been gathering around this one particular waterhole. I was watching when zebra...

The other evening on drive, our mission was to find the wild dogs. It was my guests’ last game drive before they headed home and all our attempts to find the dogs had been fruitless. We were also on the look out for elephant herds, as we had only seen bulls and the guests wanted to see breeding herds.
Shortly after leaving the lodge we encountered our...

Over the past few days myself and another ranger have been going down to the south of the reserve to photograph some small jackal pups playing at their den site. Yesterday morning when we arrived there the pups were out and about but on the far side of the clearing I saw a pride of 10 lions on a wildebeest kill. This caught our attention for a while until...

For some of you that have been to Madikwe you have experience the beautiful plains that sit towards the north eastern sections of the reserve. If you haven’t been here let me try explain. The area is massive and filled with all sort of game. Springbok, wildebeest, zebra, gemsbok, eland, steenbok, rhino and because of this the lions tend to hang around the...

The other evening while out photographing some of the reserves tiny jackal pups,we whitnessed something amazing. We had spent the whole afternoon with the little 6 week old pups, watching as the 3 of them played happily just outside the den. Then it started to get dark and a pride of 9 lions moved into the vacinity of the den. We watched as the lions took...

You just never know what you going to see out there. Last night after drive Justin and I came across something I thought we would never see in our guiding careers!! This little hedgehog was roaming around on our new lawn in the staff village. Hedgehogs are fairly abundant in parts of Europe but the Southern African Hedgehog is very rare in most parts of South Africa and completely absent in areas of high...

It was a crisp morning start as we headed out of the lodge not knowing what awaited us out in the veld. Our path was soon chosen for us by some lion tracks that we found round the first little bend, we followed up and eventually could not continue the tracking due to the area being to wet after heavy rains the night before, however some other little...

Last night we went out looking for the wild dogs with my guest who desperately wanted to see them. No pressure mark! On our way to the waterhole to see what was drinking we came across a pride of lions who where moving to go drink. While we where watching them I heard that the dogs had been seen. We left the lions and slowly made our way to the dogs...

The dogs have killed again Since Greg Smith put the sighting of the wild dogs killing an impala outside one of the rooms at the lodge. And this time outside room 14 right next to the curio shop! I however want to tell you about the wild dog sighting I had this morning. The dogs have spent the last two weeks on our hill above the lodge. This morning...
